WHAT IS ECO-PLAZA?

Minato City Eco-Plaza is a place that works with various organizations to bring people together, teach and learn from each other and rediscover the environment through the history and culture of Minato City. Experience, learn, and talk about everyday eco-actions and global issues based on three themes; ‘low carbon society’, ‘society coexisting with nature’, and ‘resource circulating society’. Eco-Plaza is an eco-base for children, adults, companies and organizations where there is always something fun happening. Let’s create the future of this ‘shining city’ together.

THREE THEMES

LOW CARBON SOCIETY

Dynamic urban activity in Minato City consumes a considerable amount of energy and creates large quantities of greenhouse gasses, making it imperative to realize a low carbon society by reducing carbon dioxide emission. At Minato City Eco-Plaza you can gain accurate knowledge about global warming and understand the importance of working toward a low carbon society, to join us in creating concrete steps to address these issues through your daily life, and from a global point of view.

NATURAL SYMBIOSIS TYPE SOCIETY

SOCIETY COEXISTING WITH NATURE

Minato City is blessed with rich greenery and nature. However, to pass this environment on to the future, we each have to understand the importance of preserving biodiversity, greenery and water, and act now in order to hand down it to future generations. Minato City Eco-Plaza provides mechanisms to develop ideas for how city residents, workers and students should live in harmony with nature starting from our daily lives and expanding to a global scale.

RESOURCE CIRCULATING SOCIETY

Waste is an inevitable product of human life. Greenhouse gasses produced when incinerating this waste, and trouble securing disposal sites are growing issues. At Minato City Eco-Plaza we visualize the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) of a resource circulating society so we can all participate in creating solutions, and provide a link between changes in our daily lives and a sustainable global future.

Reduce→Reuse→Recycle

What the free space offers

  • The partitions are removable so the space to be used in a variety of ways such as for seminars, classes, and interactive leaning experiences.

  • The biotope atrium on the first floor.

The ceilings, floors, and walls of Eco-Plaza are made with timber resulting from forest thinning of cedar and cypress in the “Minato City Citizen’s Forest ,” a forest located in Akiruno City maintained by Minato City. Thinning timber is also used in our tables and chairs. The warmth of wood is all around here—a soothing space that inspires the desire to learn.

Be soothed by the warmth of wood and soft background music.
